About Dr Appraisals
Hello, I’m Dr Chris Boyson.
I’m a UK-based GP, medical appraiser and educator. Alongside my clinical work, I hold a number of roles within medical education and professional development. I am a Training Programme Director for postgraduate GP training, an examiner, and an experienced NHS appraiser. Over the years I have worked closely with doctors at every stage of their careers, from international medical graduates taking their first steps in the NHS to senior colleagues approaching revalidation.
I am an experienced appraiser, conducting appraisals both independently, as well as for multiple organisations, including the NHS.
DrAppraisals.com was founded because of a simple frustration.
As a doctor myself, I experienced first-hand how expensive and impersonal the appraisal process could feel. I was paying extortionate fees for what was a very variable appraisal experience. Appraisal is important. It protects standards and supports development. But it does not need to be burdensome, complicated or overpriced.
I set this service up with two goals: for it to be cheaper, and for it to be easier.
As a "portfolio" and locum doctor I found it difficult to navigate the appraisal and revalidation pathway. I wanted to remove some of those obstacles and create a much easier route through appraisal and revalidation, giving particular focus to all those doctors who are not in a traditional NHS job or training programme.
Founded by doctors, for doctors, our service is built on simplicity and kindness. We understand the realities of clinical practice because we are clinicians ourselves. We understand the pressures of revalidation because we go through it too.
We have deliberately kept the number of appraisers on our team extremely small. This provides continuity, keeps standards high but also allows us to keep our costs low. You deal with the appraisers directly and we deal with the admin ourselves. There are no non-medical staff that won’t know the answer to your question! We also conduct 99% of all our appraisals virtually which is more convenient for both appraiser and appraisee. By keeping these overheads minimal, and operating an intimate team, we are able to offer high quality, GMC-compliant appraisals at a fair and accessible price.
Over time, we have built strong relationships with doctors across the UK and internationally. Many of our clients come through word of mouth. "I genuinely enjoy my Appraiser role. I enjoy the two-way learning that occurs between appraiser and appraisee. I enjoy seeing an appraisee relax when they start to see the appraisal process as an opportunity, and not as a barrier. A good Appraiser should work hard to extract information from an appraisee who perhaps has, on paper, provided very minimal evidence. I find it is quite rare that an appraisee has not naturally met the GMC's annual requirements and it is up to the Appraiser to be proactive and help the appraisee identify these moments."
