Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the learning and professional development you undertake to keep your knowledge and skills up to date throughout your medical career.
CPD is a mandatory part of appraisal and revalidation. CPD is also the only type of the six categories of appraisal and revalidation evidence that can be collected and demonstrated irrespective of employment and practice status. So, even if you have been unemployed or otherwise off work, or worked solely overseas, you will need to collect and present UK CPD at appraisal.
Your CPD should be relevant to your level and role(s), scope of practice, PDPs, interests or career aspirations, and you should be able to reflect on what you have learned.
Though the GMC does not specify a minimum amount of CPD, most doctors traditionally undertake a minimum of 50 CPD hours per appraisal and 250 hours over a revalidation cycle.
